Compound by the Container, Not by the Gallon

Enter the board square footage and the finish level and this gives you the compound in gallons and in pounds, then converts it into the containers on the shelf: 4.5 gallon boxes, 5 gallon pails, or bags of setting-type powder. Tape comes with it, because running out of tape stops the job exactly as effectively as running out of mud. The finish level matters more than anything else here — a Level 5 skim coat takes twice what a Level 3 under texture does on the same wall.

The extra allowance covers what dries in the pan, what comes off in the sanding, and the second look at a joint that did not go flat. Ten per cent is a sensible default and you can set it to zero.

Boxes and pails are alternatives, not a total — pick whichever your supplier sells you cheaper per gallon. Setting-type is the same job done with hot mud, if that is how you work.

Step by Step

How to Work Out How Much Drywall Mud You Need

Joint compound runs about 0.8 gallons per 100 square feet of drywall for a standard Level 4 finish — less for a Level 3 that is going under texture, half again as much for a Level 5 skim coat. That is the whole calculation, and the reason people look it up is not the arithmetic but the containers: compound is sold in 4.5 gallon boxes, 5 gallon pails and paper bags of setting-type powder, and knowing you need 5 gallons does not immediately tell you what to put in the truck.

1. Take the board area, not the room area

Walls plus ceilings, the same square footage you used to order the sheets. Compound follows the board that went up, so use the measured area rather than the area plus waste.

2. Pick the finish level

Level 3 if a texture or a heavy coating is going over it, Level 4 for standard flat paint or wallpaper, Level 5 for gloss paint or a wall that will be raked by light. The level is the single biggest factor and it changes the answer by a factor of two from end to end.

3. Multiply by the coverage rate

0.6 gallons per 100 square feet at Level 3, 0.8 at Level 4, 1.2 at Level 5. A 640 square foot room at Level 4 is 5.1 gallons.

4. Add an allowance for what you never get to use

Ten per cent covers what skins over in the pan, what comes off in the sanding, and the joint that needs a fourth look. Nobody has ever regretted having a little too much mud on a job.

5. Convert to containers you can buy

Ready-mixed all-purpose comes in 4.5 gallon boxes at about 61.7 lb and 5 gallon pails. Setting-type comes as powder in bags by weight and you mix what you need. Round up to whole containers, because that is what you pay for.

6. Add the tape at the same time

Roughly half a linear foot of tape per square foot of board, corners included, sold in 250 and 500 foot rolls. Tape is cheap and running out of it stops the job just as effectively as running out of mud.

A 16 x 12 room with 8 foot ceilings — 448 square feet of wall plus a 192 square foot ceiling. Standard Level 4 finish, 10% allowance.

Which Compound, and Why It Matters More Than the Quantity

Buying the right amount of the wrong compound is a worse mistake than buying too little of the right one. There are four in common use and they are not interchangeable.

All-purpose, ready-mixed

The default. Works for the tape coat and the fill coats, sands reasonably, and holds tape well. If you are buying one bucket, this is it.

Topping compound

Softer and easier to sand, meant for the last coat only. It does not bond tape properly, so it is the wrong choice for a first coat no matter how nice it feels to work with.

Lightweight all-purpose

Easier to sand and less to carry up a ladder, at some cost in strength. Popular for finish coats on ceilings for exactly that reason.

Setting-type, the powder

Chemically hardens rather than drying out, in a set time you choose by the label — twenty minutes, forty-five, ninety. It lets you get several coats on in one day, it fills deep gaps without shrinking, and it works in cold or damp air where ready-mix will not dry. It also sands harder, so it is usually a fill compound rather than a finish one.

Do not mix families mid-joint

Setting-type under ready-mixed is normal and fine. Topping under tape is not. The failures show up weeks later as a cracked or lifting joint, long after anyone remembers which bucket it came from.

Buy one more container than the arithmetic says

Compound is one of the cheapest items on a drywall job and the most disruptive to run out of, because the whole crew stops. The extra container also becomes the touch-up you leave with the customer.

Where Estimates Go Wrong

Using topping compound for the tape coat

It does not have the bond strength to hold tape. The joint looks perfect and cracks a month later.

Estimating Level 5 at Level 4 rates

A skim coat covers the entire surface, not just the joints, and it needs half again as much compound. Estimating it as a normal finish leaves you short across the whole job at once.

Thinning ready-mix too far

A little water makes it workable; too much makes it shrink and crack as it dries, and it costs you a coat you thought you had finished.

Leaving the lid off

A skinned bucket wastes real material and the lumps end up in a joint where they have to be sanded out. The waste from this is bigger than most people estimate for.

Buying by the box without checking the gallons

Boxes and pails hold different amounts and are priced differently. Compare per gallon, not per container.

How much drywall mud do I need per square foot?

About 0.008 gallons per square foot at a standard Level 4 finish — easier to think of as 0.8 gallons per 100 square feet. Level 3 is 0.6 and a Level 5 skim coat is 1.2.

How much mud do I need for a 12x12 room?

With 8 foot ceilings, a 12 x 12 room is about 384 square feet of wall plus a 144 square foot ceiling, so roughly 530 square feet of board. At Level 4 that is 4.2 gallons, so one 4.5 gallon box will just do it — buy two if the ceiling is getting a skim.

How many gallons is a box of joint compound?

4.5 gallons, weighing about 61.7 lb, is the usual ready-mixed box. Pails are commonly 5 gallons. Compare price per gallon rather than per container.

What is the difference between all-purpose and setting-type compound?

All-purpose is ready-mixed and dries by evaporation, so it is weather-dependent and slow. Setting-type is a powder that hardens chemically in a time you pick from the label, which lets you put several coats on in a day and fill deep gaps without shrinkage. Setting-type sands harder, so it is normally used for filling and all-purpose for finishing.

Can I use topping compound for the first coat?

No. Topping is formulated to sand easily, not to bond, and it will not hold tape reliably. Use all-purpose or a setting-type for the tape coat and save the topping for the last one.

How much tape do I need?

About half a linear foot per square foot of board, which already allows for the corners. A 640 square foot room takes around 320 feet, so two 250 foot rolls.
